The toucan’s beak, is 1/3 of the length of the bird’s body but accounts for only 7% of its weight. Composed of bony struts,
it serves to absorb kinetic energy, dampen vibrations
and acts as a heat exchanger, whilst enabling the bird
to fly and manoeuvre effortlessly.

It is not the quantity of material that matters,
but how it is organised in space.

Lattice structures mimic biology in engineering

Engineering and mathematics have drawn direct inspiration from this principle found in nature.

A lattice structure is a network of interconnected struts or beams, arranged in a repeating geometric pattern.
By designing the shape, density and orientation of each individual cell, we can create materials whose properties are not fixed by their chemistry, but engineered through their architecture.
